The Little Feather Center - Training Program

"The pipestone quarries were regarded as hallowed ground and only those selected during ceremony would dare enter the quarries to quarry for pipestone. The rest would remain in camp not daring to enter the hallowed ground." - Chuck Derby

Camping

Spirit of Peace Powwow Grounds are where the participants will be camping out during the workshops. This is land that was traditionally used for campsites when Native people came to quarry. While we were clearing the land we found various pipestone articles that had been carved using primitive tools. The land is close to water so it seems an ideal spot to set up a tipi. While we are on the grounds we often feel the spirits of the people there, and where the arbor is erected seems to be especially strong with spirits.

The Grounds are very quiet, and perfect for primitive camping. We often have people ask if they can stay there because it is different to the usual campground experience. Last year we had some people staying and we went to put the generator on for the light at night, and they stopped us and said that the reason they wanted to stay there was because it was quiet, dark and away from the roads. Some of the Dakota often go over there at night to watch the stars or meteor showers, and during the day just to go somewhere quiet and peaceful.

There will be a Port-a-potty set up on the grounds all summer, and a water tank with fresh water. We will also have a shaded area where cooking can be done if needed.

Participants in the Training program will be able to set up prior to Registration, or if you prefer the evening before.

You will be welcome to stay extra days if you wish. Camping is free.
