The Reservation Tour 2003

Due to the war in Iraq we realize that people are wary of travelling by plane and so those living in Europe and Africa who are interested in coming on the tour are worried because they feel they may miss out. Please don't worry if this is the case because we have decided to repeat the tour in 2004. Let's all hope that the world is in a more stable position by then, and all of our troops are back home safely.

Day 1 - Sunday, July 6, 2003

Arrive in Pipestone, (You are welcome to come in a day earlier if you prefer,)
Guided tour around 'Spirit of Peace' museum owned by Chuck Derby.
5pm: go to Dakota Dreams for the night…….
A take-away (chinese) meal, snacks and movies* in Woodstock.
(*'Thunderheart', 'Dances with Wolves', 'Buffalo Girls')
(
over 7 hours of movies, these feature the places we will be going to on the tour, we will watch at least one of them just to get you in the mood!)

Day 2 - Monday, July 7, 2003

Breakfast in Langes by 9 am,
go to Monument for a quick walk around (1 hour)
11.am leave for Flandreau for lunch
1 pm. Leave for Mitchell
2:30 pm. See Corn Palace, then move on to the Prehistoric Indian Village (1 ˝ hours)
4:00 Leave for Chamberlain
6:30 Book into motel for the night and eat in Chamberlain/Oacoma.
(The motel is close to Al's Oasis that has a great buffet.)
Relax for the night.

There will be pools in all motels we stay in)

Day 3 - Tuesday, July 8, 2003

Breakfast at Al's Oasis by 9 am,
9:30: Akta Museum at the St. Joseph's Indian School. (1 ˝ hours)
11 am: Big Bend Dam and museum Crow Creek reservation (1 hour)
1 pm: Lower Brule Casino for lunch (1 hour)
Continue on to Pierre on the 'Native American Scenic Byway'
3:30 pm: Arrive in Pierre (
It will be another 4 hours to the motel so please get a snack in Pierre if you want to) from Pierre through the area where 'Dances with Wolves' was made, via Hayes, to Wall,6:30 (7:30)

We add an extra hour here because of moving onto Mountain time) where we will have our evening meal and will be staying for two nights.

Day 4 - Wednesday, July 9, 2003

Breakfast at Wall Drug and a look around this world wide famous store
10 am: Leave for the Badlands   There are various places to stop along the way to take photographs. This scenery is very much different to the areas you have seen up until now. Very rugged and picturesque.
We will be heading down to the Pine Ridge Reservation to see the Wounded Knee cemetery. (4:00) This is a very historical and spiritual area. We can spend an hour at the memorial. (
Please bring tobacco if you wish to leave an offering).
5:00: back to Wall for the night (7:00)

Day 5 - Thursday, July 10, 2003

After an early breakfast we will set off for Rapid City, and a full day of site- seeing…….
9:00 Leave for Rapid City and the Black Hills
10:00 Go to see Prairie Edge……. (
Don't buy too much!) (1 hour)
11:30 Mount Rushmore (1 hour)
1:00 Crazy Horse Mountain and lunch (2 hours)
3:00 leave for Deadwood
4:30 arrive in Deadwood, and register in Motel.
Deadwood is a historic town and there are various things to see.
The cemetery (Boot Hill) is the final resting place of Calamity Jane, who is known for riding the Deadwood stage, and Wild Bill Hickok, a famous gambler. ('
Buffalo Girls')   Tours leave at various times during the day… you will be in time for the 5pm tour if you wish to go
This town has casinos if you want to go in them!

There is also supposed to be the world's third biggest sculpture in Deadwood too, owned by Kevin Costner, it is of a buffalo hunt, as depicted in DWW. It is going to be opened to the public in April 2003. We will find out more information about this before we leave on the tour.)

Day 6 - Friday, July, 2003

After breakfast we drive out to Wyoming, passing by Devils Tower, (1 ˝ hours out) and up into the Northern Cheyenne reservation in Montana. This is a longish drive and so we will be stopping for lunch in Sheriden WY, before driving on through the reservation to the Little Big Horn Battlefield National Monument.

9:00 Leave Deadwood
10:30 Drive by Devils Tower, (
stop for photograph taking and bathroom only)
1 pm: stop for lunch in Sheriden Wyoming.
2:00 move on to the Little Big Horn
4:00 Little Big Horn National Monument (2 hours) then move on to Miles City, MT for the night which is another 2 hours further east.
8:00 A late night for registering into the Motel.

Day 7 - Saturday, July 12, 2003

Today we want to reach Flandreau in South Dakota in time for the grand entry of the powwow at 7pm.
This will be a great culmination of the week for you all.

9:00 leave Miles City for Mobridge. (we lose an hour on the trip back because of the change back to Central time)
2 pm: Have lunch and go to see the grave of Sitting Bull on the Standing Rock reservation. (1 ˝ hours)
3:30: Head for Flandreau………….
7:30 Powwow at Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal powwow grounds grand opening at 7ish (
Indian Time).
When the powwow has finished everyone over to Woodstock for the night.


End of tour, but if you are staying on for a day or two there is still the Pipestone County Museum to see, and you could have another look around the Monument , and maybe Chuck could take you to the quarry area and explain more about the quarrying process if you wish. Please let us know on the form if you would like to do this.
