2021: We are sad to announce that Joyce London Mohamoud,
our President, passed away a few days ago. Due to this we are
taking off, from each page, the contact details for this organization.
The information may be re-added once a decision is made about
the organization. If any groups are functionng this should not
affect them. We hope that you will understand our decision.
Welcome
to Parents Count and thank you for your interest! This organization
was started as an unincorporated entity within the Department
of Pediatrics, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey
(UMDNJ) over forty years ago by Joyce Mohamoud, now president.
In addition
to providing self-help support groups, Parents Count also recognizes
a need to change public and professional attitudes and perceptions
of child abuse to one which focuses on parents as the avenue
for change, as opposed to the current climate in which professionals
are the primary change agent.
Research
has shown that social support, reciprocity, advocacy, empowerment
and responsibility are all demonstrated mechanisms that effect
significant changes in the lives of parents. Parents Count offers
a place for parents to find support and get the help that they
need, when they need it!
Parents
Count offers self help support for parents who for one reason
or another are unable to deal with the pressures of child-rearing.
We are also working on an initiative to work with parents of
Gender Variant children.
The group
that is running right now is based in Trenton, NJ, with plans
to start groups in Princeton, NJ and The Bronx, NY.
Thank
you again for your interest in Parents Count Anonymous.
