Oil well in North Dakota out of control, leaking:
Blowout occurred late Thursday. Reuters report
from Friday 4:22 PM said (well) "was leaking between
50 and 70 barrels per day of fracking fluid that contains
chemicals, water and sand, a company spokesman said."
Local news report from Friday 6:01 PM says: "an
oil spill near Watford City that's spewing 200
barrels of oil an hour."..."Lynn Helms with
the Department of Mineral Resources says the bottom
piece of a 3 part "blow out preventer" broke."
"Right now, he
thinks the cold weather may have caused the piece to
break."
Cold weather? in North
Dakota? Shocking. Who are the clowns running this s--t?
So, if the company
says 50-70 barrels of fracking fluid per day, and local
news and DMR rep says 200 barrels of oil per hour, what
is the real amount and material being spilled? 50-70
barrels of 'fracking fluid' is a bit different than
4,800 barrels of crude oil.

of an oil well blowout, as it appears the authorities
do not allow the public / press within miles of an oil
well accident in ND.
Feb 14 (Reuters) - A Whiting Petroleum Corp oil
well in North Dakota was leaking drilling fluids after
a blowout late on Thursday, company and state officials
said on Friday.
The well lost control
after a blowout preventer failed and was leaking between
50 and 70 barrels per day of fracking fluid that contains
chemicals, water and sand, a company spokesman said.
The leak, close to
the frozen Cherry Creek in McKenzie County, was contained
and the fluids were being collected and trucked from
the site. No liquids entered the water, Whiting said.
Fracking fluid is pumped
into a well under pressure to fracture rock deep underground
to release oil or natural gas.
A blowout typically
occurs when an unexpected burst of high pressure comes
up the well, causing a loss of control.
"The well is not
under control," said Kris Roberts, a spokesman
for the North Dakota Department of Health on Friday
afternoon. "They're still diverting what's flowing
from the well into storage tanks and hauling that."
A three-foot berm has
been placed around the well, containing the liquids
within the site, Lynn Helms, the head of North Dakota's
Department of Mineral Resources, said on a conference
call.
Some "mist," a combination of oil and water,
did spray onto the frozen creek, but because of the
ice and the snow it will be easier to clean up, Helms
said.
"This a large
(blowout) and also in terms of health and human risk
it's a big one. Pressure and control of a well is essentially
priority number one for oil and gas companies,"
Helms said, referring to the risk to personnel working
on site.
He said there would
be a "very serious postmortem" conducted with
the company.
North Dakota is home
to the giant Bakken shale oil formation and has experienced
a boom in oil production especially in the counties
of McKenzie, Williams, Dunn and Mountrail in the west
of the state.
Fargo, ND (WDAY
TV) - Vaccum trucks are scrambling to clean up an
oil spill near Watford City that's spewing 200 barrels
of oil an hour.
The Whiting Petroleum
well blew last night.
Lynn Helms with the
Department of Mineral Resources says the bottom piece
of a 3 part "blow out preventer" broke.
Helms says some oil
mist did reach the ice on top of Cherry Creek, but that
it shouldn't affect the water.
Lynn Helms/Director
of Mineral Resources: This is a large one and
also in terms of health and human risk, it's a big one.
We've had inspectors on sight since I think about 40
minutes after it was reported so it's being managed
but it's not under control yet and until it is, it's
not a safe situation"
Helms also says there
were no injuries and everyone was evacuated.
He says Whiting Petroluem
will pay all of the bills for this spill.
Right now, he thinks
the cold weather may have caused the piece to break.

Horrible. There are at least 6 different fracking companies
in that area, including Halliburton. Makes me sick and
sad. I flew in to Williston a couple weeks ago and drove
to Montana and its an entirely different scene ;o( This
young man on the plane who has been fracking for a few
years now has a lung disease called silicosis, but was
more proud of all the money he was making ;o( tears
