'One Ring to rule them all,
One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all,
And in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the shadows lie.'

Hobbits

The hobbits, Merry, Frodo, Sam and Pippen in Rivendell

Hobbits are short, gentle beings with furry feet, they live in small homes in the earth, and they LOVE food. Most of us first heard about Hobbits when Bilbo Baggins went on his adventures with the Dwarves in 'The Hobbit'.  I believe that they were pretty well educated as well. Take a look at the books located in Bag End and you'll see what I mean.

For the movie they wanted to cast regular sized people and then play with special effects to make them look smaller. They found five great actors for the main characters, Bilbo, Frodo, Sam. Merry and Pippin. Then they found smaller folk to play the parts of these actors in scenes where the special effects wouldn't work. When you watch the movies you can't really tell the difference.

Gollum said 'Hobbitses', when he spoke about them in his strange voice, it is quite catchy. At one point he says 'Cruel little hobbitses', but more often 'nice little Hobbitses'. I like to think they are the latter!

In the picture above you can see Frodo (Elijah Wood) holding the sword that Frodo gave him while they were in Rivendell, it was made by the Elves, is very light and strong and is called 'Sting'. It glows blue when Orcs are close by, a very useful tool to have on this quest I would think.

The Hobbit was written for children by JRR Tolkien, he used to tell stories about hobbits to his own child, it started when he came up with the sentence, 'In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.' The Idea grew into the first book that led onto Lord of the Rings, 'The Hobbit, or There and Back Again.' a title you may remember from The Two Towers.

Hobbits may be small but they are also very brave.

A different type of site that Tolkein would probably approve of. Environmental information and politics, also a report of a great interview with Viggo and Orlando on the Charlie Rose show.
