Staines is an urban area in the Borough (Hundreds) of Spelthorne (Spelethorne). The main towns in Spelthorne are Staines (Stanes), Ashford (Exeford), Stanwell (Stanwelle), Shepperton (Scepertone), Sunbury (Sunbarie). The High Street

The Angel
Hotel
The Angel has a number of reincarnations, this is one of the latest ones, probably in the 1970's. This time there is a Liqour Market inside it. That probably meant a bar or pub. (2021: Right now there is a restaurant in it, Turtle Bay.)

High Street. The beautiful building with the towers was demolished in the 60's I believe.
You can see the White Lion and the Iron Bridge in the middle of the picture.

High Street Drawing

The Angel & Crown. Plenty of horses, bicycles, and baby carriages. Edwardian times I would think.
Close ups of parts of this photo shown below.

I believe that this shop was owned by a family called Gubbins. It looks like it could be Mildred Gubbins on the shop itself.
Note the rolls of Lino outside the shop for sale. Wonderful gas lamps too, Wow!

I worked in Bata's shoes, next to the ABC, (on the right) in 1961/2 and dreamed of working over the road at Dolcis because their shoes were so in fashion. I never did though instead I moved to the office in Woolworths just along the High Street. This postcard brought back many memories to me. It is ©Francis Frith

High Street in the 1950's. It took me a while to remember what the store on the right was, then found the photo below. It was Kennards. (Later Debenhams) Almost on the corner of Thames Street and the High Street.

Look at the queue outside Kennards, wow! I would think that a Sale would be going on. Look at all the bikes parked outside!

Kennards grew and in 1973 became this building...

Which turned into Debenhams...
(GoogleEarth)

2021: Sadly this building is now empty due to our 21st century changes in shopping habits and Covid 19.
Quite the opposite to the first Kennards pic with all of those people waiting to go in!
