FLOODS

The local floods in 2014
This was taken from the Swan in the Hythe. Showing Staines Bridge and the new building where the Regal (ABC) Cinema was.

The floods in Staines and surrounding areas, happened in both January and February of 2014. many local residents became homeless at that time. They were the worse floods since 1947. I have added a couple of photos from that time period as well. Everyone, Civilian Volunteers, Police, Army and Councillers alike, joined together to help in the relief effort.

In the Spelthorne Museum sandbags were piled high and everything was put on bricks because the water was coming up from under the road next to the back doors. Luckily nothing was harmed!

Floods in 1947
In this one you can see Staines Bridge along with the temporary Bailey Bridge, to the upper left of the Gas Company storage tank which was along the Causeway. The railway bridge on Thames Street is top centre. The Hythe (between the two bridges) looks like an island!

1947
My first memory is of one of these boats trying to rescue my Mum and me. I was about 18 months old. We were Ok as my Granddad had built our house, down Chertsey Lane, on stilts. The Thames always flooded down there and so when he moved to the land in 1923 he decided to make his house flood proof! We were safe. I'm not sure where this photo was taken.

2014 - Floods at the Lammas. Church Island at the top.

2014 - Councillor Colin Davis at Church Island by the Lammas.

2014 - Roberts Watts, Leader of the Council, at Notcutts to meet the army who came out to assist during the floods.

2014 - And here are the Big Boys of Westminster who came to check out the floods in Staines. Our local MP Kwasi Kwarteng (left) next to the Prime Minister, (at the time) David Cameron (centre) with a Staines local, Ray Connerlley.

This is a Flood record marker you can see it on Clarence Street. This is for the Colne River.

This was in the 2014 Floods. You can see the difference to the photo above

2014 - Thames Street, Jubilee Gardens is where the photo was taken from.

2014 - Taken on the same side of the new apartment building shown on the first photo. I wonder if they class this as a pool?!
