DAKOTA 38+
2 MEMORIAL RIDE - 2022
Hello, It is December 14th,
2022, and the final Dakota 38 + 2 Memorial Ride is in it's fifth day.
This is the fifth webpage of the Ride.
I have added the different
years Rides pages at the bottom of the webpages where the other links
are, so that those of you who are new can see them.
The background of this page
is the Ride entering the Pipestone National Monument in 2021
This section will stay here
all along the Ride to enable people to get calendars no matter what day
they come in first.
I am making some different
calendars this year. The first one is of the horses through the years,
the second one will be of unusual, beautiful, photos that have been taken
through the years. They will be $5 each payable to the Go Fund Me page
for the Ride expenses. The 3rd one I am working on is a Historic one,
of the Dakota 38 and 1862. That Calendar will be FREE. Years ago I was
given permission to use these photos from the MN Historical Society as
long as I didn't charge anyone for them. So the Calendar with those photos
will be free. Same proceedure. Gloria (Admin)

I hope this URL works OK.
If you want a Calendar, please
email me at dakota38@dragonflydezignz.50megs.com
ASAP
Let me know which you want and I will email you a PDF file so that you
can print them out yourself. As usual I will need an up to date email
address from you, or it/they won't reach you, Thanks, Gloria
For those of you who have ordered calendars, you are on my list and
the PDF's will be sent out as soon as I have them tested. Keep an eye
out in your email, also the junk mail just in case! Thanks - Gloria
Prayers for the day from
Elaine L Bear 2022
We're praying for you, your sacrifices, your safety... stay in your prayers.
"Now be brave and fight for what you love. The elders say that one
of Crazy Horse's war cries was, "Maka ki ecela tehani yanke lo!"
"Only the Earth lasts forever." Stronghearts to the front."
Alberta & Jim
Miller 2022
We know that prayers are powerful. Today the riders are moving east to
Woonsocket, SD in the midst of icy ground, freezing fog and high winds.
Please add a special prayer for the riders and sunka wakan oyate as they
are now on the move. I often share this powerful image which captures
each rider's sacred aura.

Here are some good wishes
for the Riders that came in since yesterday.
Once I have collected your post I will like it. If I haven't liked it
I won't have got it on my file yet.
Day 4/5
Nina Fox
We all arrived safely into Woonsocket, SD ahead of the expecting
storm. In-between lags there is so much to do. Everyone pitches
in to show appreciation for the donated space by cleaning up prior
to pulling out. Plus, there is cooking, running errands and making
sure the kids have done their assigned homework.

The Dakota
by Allen Sheppard 2017
The Dakota are universally conceded to be of the highest type, physically,
mentally, and probably morally, of any of the western tribes. Their bravery
has never been questioned by white or Indian, and they conquered or drove
out every rival except the Chippewa. They are educated in their own language,
and through the agency of missionaries of the type of Riggs, Williamson,
Cleveland, and Cook, many books in the Dakota language have been printed,
and papers in Dakota are issued regularly.
Socially, the Dakota originally
consisted of a large number of local groups or bands, and, although there
was a certain tendency to encourage marriage outside the band, these divisions
were not true gentes remembered blood relationship, according to Clark,
being the only bar to marriage. Personal fitness and popularity determined
chieftainship more than heredity, but where decent played any part it
was usually from father to son.
The tipi might belong to
either parent and was obtained by that parent through some ancestor who
had had its character revealed in a dream or who had captured it in war.
The authority of the chief
was limited by the band council, without whose approbation little or nothing
could be accomplished. War parties were recruited by individuals who had
acquired reputation as successful leaders, while the shamans formulated
ceremonial dances and farewells for them. Polygamy Was common, the wives
occupying different sides of the tipi. Remains of the dead were usually,
though not invariably, placed on scaffolds.
In 1904 the Dakota Nation
were distributed among the following agencies and school superintendencies:
Cheyenne River (Miniconjou, Sans Arcs, and Two Kettle), 2,477;
Crow Creek (Lower Yanktonai), 1,025;
Ft Totten school (Sisseton, Wahpeton, and Pabaksa), 1,013;
Riggs Institute (Santee), 279;
Ft Peck (Yankton), 1,116;
Lower Brutes (Lower Brule), 470
Pine Ridge (Oglala), 6,690;
Rosebud (Brulé, Waglukhe, Lower Brulé, Northern, Two Kettle,
and Wazhazha), 4,977;
Santee (Santee), 1,075;
Sisseton (Sisseton and Wahpeton), 1,908;
Standing Rock (Sihasapa, Hunkpapa, and Yanktonai), 3,514;
Yankton (Yankton), 1,702
