The Dakota 38+2
Memorial is a drug and alcohol free horseback ride that
focuses on prayer. During the rest day of this year's
ride we will also include presentations about community
healing, overcoming addiction to meth, the sacred relationship
between the horse and his/her relative and genealogy.
We are thankful to Tamara Stjohn, THPO from SWO, who
has offered to share information on Dakota family history.

As the Ride started this
horse was seen in the sky over Lake Andes, and caught
on camera by Lauren Crowe. It was shared with us by
Kandi World Turner. As above so below, and the Spirits
rode with them. 2014

About
the same time Keith Nichols took this photo
at the Lower Brule
An
Eagle watched over it all, I was told that it
stayed there for quite a while, just watching.
Again the Riders were being protected by Tunkashila

Sending many prayers and
blessings to the Dakota 38 + 2 riders and runners for
there up and coming journey. I know there are alot of
people back here who would love to attend this spiritual
event this year, hoping within the next few years we'll

Still on my list to ride
one day, once I am healthy enough and have the finances.
But I realize just how many do not know about this,
and how sad that is. I have shown so many people the
documentary, and even got it shown in schools. Every
little bit helps. For every person I show and touch
their lives, I have accomplished something. I will be
making the biggest staff this year, and put it out along
with the one I made last year. This new staff will have
hundreds of Macaw and other parrot feathers. I will
hopefully get the Dakota 38 T shirt, and carry this
giant staff where I go. People will see it, and ask,
I will spread the message. This giant staff, made from
these feathers, will represent healing and knowledge.
It is an honor to be a part of this.

"Question, I've been asked? Will there be anything done
to honor the 38 in the community, and in place of the ride?"
These are the answers to Wilfred's question:

I am so excited to follow the
ride here and so sad I will not be with you all day to day.
As some of you may know my homie and co-worker from Mexico
needed to go back last week - I accompanied him to the border
of Texas/Mexico. I've got a lot of work to do without him.
I hope to meet up with the ride when I get free time and on
some weekends - I will be praying for you everyday - join
with you as you have morning prayers. Peace and Blessings
on you all Mitakuye Oyasin.... - Marque Jensen 2011

From Alberta Iron Cloud Miller:
December 8th 2013:
As the Dakota 38+2 Wokiksuye Ride begins it causes me to reflect
on the blessings that have come from the Dakota 38 and the
Creator for it is through their influence and love for their
people that the dream was given to mihasani Jim Miller. He
was given the message and he followed through. We've met so
many people on this journey who never knew that Abraham Lincoln
condemned these Dakota warriors to death. We've met so many
who never knew their own Dakota history, especially the young
people. We never knew that the Dakota who fled across the
Medicine Line (Canada) are still considered refugees. We met
elders who told us that the ancestors must see the suffering
and want their people to heal. The ride is for healing the
people and the world. Forgiveness and reconciliation is a
huge responsibility which many still cannot see because of
the heavy burden carried from historical trauma. Let us keep
focused on our prayers. Jim always says that the dream is
not about him, it never was, it is the message that is important.
In support of the ride there are so many beautiful people
out there who give of themselves such as the riders, the support
team, the runners, the women in prison who conduct their own
ceremony for the Dakota 38. The healing is spreading!
A lovely moving poem from
a Supporter Alissa Turensky 2013
Riding into midnight
But not to catch a train
Its the honoring of heroes
With nothing left to gain
The memories still with us
Heartbreak raw and tender still
Reparations don't repair
Generational suicide and ill
Won't you remember them
Massed up ready to die
My heart is there
Can't you still hear them cry
Ride or die, the native stance
Focused and cold
Society doesn't give a passing glance
I am praying to Great Spirit above
That one day all will see
This detrimental hate disguised as love

Thanks Alissa!

Thank you for the inspiration, and careful consideration
of the ride this year. More of a spiritual journey this
year. As a European descended ally I am using this time
to unlearning the false historical narrative of where
I live & grew up next to the MN River Valley. Study
of Bdote & the Dakota US War, conversation with
indigenous neighbors, the journey forward in our faith-based
collaborations. Many thanks to the Sacred Sites tours
and MN Council of churches discussion series. Thank
YOU for ongoing information & inspiration.

I'm from Buffalo, New York. My father and grandmother
were Seneca, or Onondowaga. They both passed away before
they were 50 because of health issues and addiction.
I live in Arkansas now, far from home. I understand
what it is like to be removed (a long story) from home
and family. I found the smoothfeather productions video
of the first ride in 2008 in 2013, and I wept and grieved
and learned.
I joined this group
to thank you all for doing this. For the gratitude.
For the humility. For the love. Thank you to all of
the first riders, and to all of the riders that have
ridden in the last 9 years. Thank you all for doing
the work to let us share in this experience, in this
healing.
I'm not Lakota,
but I'm moved in love and gratitude for the work y'all
are doing. I appreciate it so much and wanted to send
out my love and the healing and safe keeping of my Creator
to be with y'all on this ride.
Stay safe and warm.
Many thanks and love.

A Heart Warming Story
(From 2013)
This man's story is very compelling. He tells it so much better
but let me try.
His great grandfather rode cavalry
and was part of the regiment that forceably relocated the
Indians from Minnesota to the Dakota's. Within the last year
he found out about this. He was deeply moved by the documentary
and hurt by his family history. He wanted to reverse the roles
today.
Today Jacob and I walked 13
miles from Lower Brule to the Flag site by Fort Thompson.
Before we left he poured out some water from the Missouri
onto the ground as a symbol of our journey. At each location
along the route he will do this.
At Mankato he plans to drop
Missouri water into the Minnesota River to symbolize the coming
home of a great people.
Thank you Jacob.

Absolutely awesome, pidamayaye, even virtual seeing
previous years makes my heart swell, tears fall, I love
this Wokiksuye. Are we doing the daily united prayer
this year?
|
Jujé McGregor
When I first learned about these brave warriors and
how they carried themselves with such bravery, dignity
and honour during this terrible event that took place
in 1862, I was overwhelmed with a sadness which lasted
many days. It has since become a yearly inner acknowledgement
to honour these warriors and to honour the Riders by
consciously 'walking with them' through to December
26th.
Wakan Tanka, taku nitawa ... Hearts love and many blessings

This is a wonderful messge from a new member Tiffany
Joseph.
I speak for all the ladies in the South Dakota woman's
prison who wish they could b there for the riders ..
once we learned about the ride we followed n tired to
do what we could for the riders .. one year we raised
money in support of them, for the ladies inside they
send out prayers each day, go to sweat as well as have
their pipes ceremony for them. Shirley crane educated
us about the ride so what we would love for all riders
to know is that all the woman locked up are praying
hard for u, n are there in spirit.
I hope the Ladies from this post still follow us
each year. Gloria
