Dakota 38 + 2 Memorial Ride 2018

Day 12

Today we remember Shelly.

Michelle L. Bausch
May 13th 1976 - December 21 2014

Michelle L. Bausch, 38, of Allen, Nebraska passed away suddenly on Sunday, December 21, 2014 in Fairmont, Minnesota while leaving the Dakota 38 + 2 Memorial Ride.

The photo above is of Dakota,sub-Chief Mankato. he was the son of Good Road. In 1858 he was one of the Chiefs who went to Washington DC and signed a Treaty there, although his name is spelled wrong, "Makawto". Or maybe it is we, of today, who spell it wrong!

Mankato was one of the Dakota who took up the Governments offer to become a farmer and get a new house made for him by the Government! He lived on the outskirts of the Lower Sioux area. However when the time came, and the war started he like many other's fought. he was one of the leaders and was spoken about as being 'Brave'. He lead some of the men who went and attacked Fort Ridgley on the second day. He was also at the Battle at Birch Coulee and Wood Lake where he was shot by a cannon ball and killed on September 23rd 1862. His men saw the cannon ball first and called to him to "look out," but he refused to move. He was hit in the side and back, and died a few minutes later. Big Eagle said he had been buried by the Yellow Medicine river, but that has been disputed by someone else who was there at the time..

One wonders if he hadn't been killed at Wood Lake if he, because he had been in so many battles, would have been hung in Mankato.

My students and I have been following the ride since you left Lower Brule. Here are some of their comments:
Thank you for doing this and healing. Our people keep going even though it gets hard at times. If you know who you're doing it for, you'll be able to keep going.
Thank you for doing this for the 38. Keep warm and have a good ride.
Thanks for everything you are doing for our culture. Keep warm and keep riding for the 38. Merry Christmas.
You are riding for a good reason, and I hope you have an amazing trip.
Keep up the good work and hope you guys stay safe.
Dear riders, Wakan Tanka is with you. #keepriding
It is so awesome how you guys ride in the cold.
Thank you for riding through the pain of the people that died.
You have taught us about peace, honor, and reconciliation. Phidamayeyapi!

Morton (rest day)

Statue outside Jackpot Junction Casino Hotel

You will now be in the area where the 1862 History took place. Morton is the town, but the Lower Sioux Agency is the Dakota area. The Jackpot Junction Casino is located here.

History is found all around this area, it almost speaks to you. If you can find the stone Warehouse that is located on County Highway 2, that is the exact place that the fighting started. Listen and see if you can hear it. I have! See my story below.

The Warehouse in Morton where the war began in 1862. I remember the first time I saw this warehouse it was in August probably 1988. I left the car by the road and walked down to the Warehouse and just stood looking at it from the side, it was a strong, stone building. As I stood watching I heard behind me voices speaking a language I didn't know but recognised. They were speaking quietly, but could be heard. there was a hedge like barrier between me and the voices, and I thought I had better move because I probably shouldn't have been there, no one else was around, they continued talking and then stopped. I gently walked over to a gap in the hedge so I could peep through, but could see no one which surprised me for I know there were quite a few people talking. So I went to a bigger opening and looked, but there was no one there, and no where for them to hide as it was a big field/open ground, and they certainly didn't come through to where I was standing. Strange. I went and spoke to my (now ex) husband who had walked off somewhere else to have a look, I asked him if he had seen any more people, he hadn't, so the mystery grew.

It wasn't until years later that I was telling a friend about this as I was there again, that I was told that this was where the Dakota had met up before attacking the Warehouse and traders buildings close by. Seems it had been a road or something similar. By this time I knew the language I had heard was Dakota, as I was at this time with my (late) husband Chuck who was Dakota, many people he knew spoke the language and to me it sounded like a song, such a beautiful language.

I have since then realized that again I had heard the voices of Spirit, the men who were going to attack the buildings had spoken, and I had heard, but not seen. They must have been excited, but scared, but they all knew that they had to have the food that was in the warehouse to save their families from starvation.

It didn't work, the stone warehouse had not burned unlike some of the other buildings, it was too strong. I didn't manage to go inside the building until the 2000's on another visit, it had been made to look as it was in 1862, a warehouse, and so I eventually got to see how it could hold a lot of things including food, there was a cellar that was cold and would have held things that needed to be kept cool so they wouldn't go bad, the rooms were large and airy. Where the gold was kept was anyone's guess, but during the fighting their annuity gold was actually inside the warehouse, it had been sent and received but the Traders didn't want the Dakota to have it as they owed money to them. Had that money been handed over the story could have been different.
