Dakota 38 + 2 Memorial Ride 2018

Day 4

I think the photo above is of Dakota men at Fort Snelling. I had never seen this photo until today so don't know the actual history but I do recognize some of them. White Spider is second left, a young Wo-wi-na-pe is second right. They could all be Little Crow's family, as both of those are also called Wakeman. I believe it is Circular Cloud (Cloud Hoop) (middle right) and another of Little Crow's relative is Ta-chun-da-hupa (middle left). Both are proudly wearing their peace medals given to them by the (a) President. I can't make out who the man on the left is although he looks very familiar, I wonder if it is a subdued Big Eagle as he was in Davenport for 2 years as well. He was good friends with Little Crow's family so could quite well be him. This photo is after 1862 and maybe it is not of Fort Snelling but of the Dakota Prison, Camp Kearney at Davenport in Iowa. As many prisoners were taken there. I will keep looking for more information and if I find any will add it here.

I contacted someone today who I worked with in the 1862 History back in the 1990's, and I showed her this photograph, she had never seen it either. I showed her another one of a man that we both worked closely with back then, we tried to get him a pardon, anyway a photo of him showed up today as well, one again I had never seen. neither had she! (His will be on a page further down the road)

Strange thought I, as I thought I knew all of the photographs that had been published from Fort Snelling and the time. Then on the Group page today one particular post from last year's Ride posts/web site showed up on the postings, first under Admin John's name, he knew nothing about it, and then it just appeared again, under the original posters name and last year's date! I think Spirit wants things shown this year for some reason. I shall keep listening and watching and obeying. Their wish is my command!

The people, mostly women who were imprisoned in Fort Snelling are listed on this web page. HERE

The men who were to be hung, are on a different list HERE

A prayer for all...

This fire was lit in Mankato for the Ride a number of years ago

Prayer to the Great Spirit
O Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds, and whose breath gives life to all the world, hear me!
I am small and weak. I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset.
Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice.
Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have taught my people.
Let me hear the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.
I need strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy – myself.
Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes.
So when life fades, as the fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame.
Aho.

Woonsocket

The Town with the Beautiful Lake..

The City of Woonsocket began in 1883 at the junction of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and Saint Paul Railroads. The superintendent of the railroad was C.H. Prior, and he named the new town Woonsocket, after his home town of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Lake Prior, located in the center of town, is named after Mr. Prior.
The town of Woonsocket grew rapidly. The first day lots were offered for sale, 50 lots were sold. Woonsocket grew so fast that it was called “Boomstrucket.”

Thank you to the Woonsocket Community for their ever welcome hospitality. They too have always been there for the Ride, and their caring is appreciated by us all.

Today the Ride goes 38 miles from Woonsocket, to Howard, where the horses will stay at the Howard Fair Grounds and the Riders will stay at the Howard 4-H Building. All meals will again be at the Chuck Wagon.

From now on, I will be putting Ron's collection of photographs on each page The first two are on this page.
Ron collects photos from various sources, some you may have seen some on the group page, others you will not have seen at all.
