Dakota 38 + 2 Memorial Ride 2018

Day 5

The photo above is of Dakota,Taopi (Wounded Man), leader of the Farmer band, who lived on individual plots of land but were still affilliated with the Traditional bands. By 1862 there were around 400 Farmers. It was said that Taopi rescued 255 captives. He was marched to Fort Snelling with 390 of his Farmers band. In 1864 he became a scout and later one of a very few who was allowed to stay in Minnesota due to his help given to the white captives.

Prayers up for a safe ride. Our Ancestors will be with you all. Riders, Horses and everyone participating know our Creator is also with you all. May our Dakota 38 plus 2 ride like the wind thru the extreme weather stay safe. Sending Smoke daily while you are riding. I have been following you for several years, my heart is so humbled by your sacrifices you all go thru to heal us all. Much Respect to you all. I love each and everyone. Emenv - Mary Setser

Great to see Emmett at the Ride, he is such a lovely man, and such an inspiration and role model.

Howard

Howard, South Dakota received its name on the 4th of July in 1881. The town’s name, Howard, was in honor of the founder’s son that had died shortly before the celebration.

Howard, SD became the agricultural center of Miner County as the pioneers came flooding into the homestead farm lands. The economy in South Dakota started changing in the late 1920’s with the depression, drought and roads being paved to large towns. Howard’s enterprising town people managed to stay alive.

Thank you to the Howard Community for their ever welcome hospitality. They too have always been there for the Ride, and their caring is appreciated by us all.

Today the Ride goes 20 miles from Howard to Madison, where the horses will stay at Bill Kretch's farm and I don't have any details of where the Riders will stay. Sorry! Breakfast and Lunch will again be at the Chuck Wagon. Dinner will be hosted by the DSU Diversity Group of Madison at Trojen Court at 6 pm.

Prayers and Good wishes from the Supporters Group for today

Evening thoughtsToday the Dakota 38 Riders gathered in Lower Brule, SD to begin a 330 mile prayer. I wish you could have been there to see what I saw today. I wish you could have heard what I heard and felt what I felt. As we circled up I couldn't help but feel a deep love and gratitude for our horses, our people and our way of life.
Nahahci ena unkupelo. We're still here.
