Dakota 38 + 2 Memorial Ride 2018

Day 15

The photo above is of Dakota, Medicine Bottle, brother of Big Eagle, who was one of the plus 2, he was kidnapped in Canada, with Shakopee (Little Six), where they had gone to for safety. They were returned to Minnesota and both were hung in 1865.

Medicine Bottle was one of the Chiefs who led the attack on Fort Ridgely, on foot. They followed a creek up to the Fort and then came up expecting to take the Fort easily, however it wasn't to be. Those of you who have been to the Fort, either today with the Ride, or at another time, will know why it didn't happen, the Dakota were using flaming arrows, or rifles, the soldiers used big guns! This was no David and Goliath, the walls of the Fort were made of stone and so thick, an arrow could not pierce them. Big Eagle says that they knew people were taking refuge in the Fort, they tried to see inside the buildings to see how many there were there, but they couldn't even see inside. They tried attacking for two days running but got nowhere, all they managed to do was set alight some out-buildings, the Fort was untouched of course. This escapade was why Medicine Bottle was hung.

To me it shows how desperate the Dakota were to make such a move on an armed, fortified, hard to reach place. Climbing up those steep hillocks must have been wearying, when I first saw the Fort, many years ago, I couldn't believe that they had even tried it. Brave people.

Words can't really describe the thoughts feelings or emotions that I have for this ride, these Riders, and the four-legged. It breaks my heart that there is even a need for this; on the other hand it is with deepest respect and gratitude that I honour all that surrounds this.
Had Jim Miller not taken an action upon the dream he was gifted, our lives may not be on the path toward healing. Many of us would not know the history. We would not know about generational trauma. We would not know what healing in action looks like. Only the great spirit knows those answers.
So today, like many others, I am filled with gratitude for what all of the Riders, four-legged, support staff, ancestors, and Creator/Great Spirit/Great Mystery are showing us.
I want to also add a special thank you for our Young Riders and their parents. May they always be allowed, and have it in their hearts to follow their traditions, to dance their dances, to be free, and to have healing surround them. May light always be with you; even on gray days! May no man, woman, government, country or any other entity ever throw hatred, discrimination, or lack of support upon their path.
We heal for you little ones. Always ride with pride, and a humbled heart. You are our future! We need you! We honour you! We love you!
Love, honour, blessings, respect to you all today

Fort Ridgely (then back to Morton for the night.)

Fort Ridgely

Take a look at the thickness of the walls. I walked around one of these rooms, back in the early 90's, and could still detect the feelings of fear coming from the stones. So even though they were in such a sturdy fortress the people in there were still scared.

Today the Ride goes 17 miles to Fort Ridgely, they then return to the Lower Sioux where they again stay at the Casino Hotel, and the horses go to Darwin Strong's Ranch again.
