Dakota 38 + 2 Memorial Ride 2018

Day 13

The photo above is of Dakota, Han-ye-tu Was-te Win, (Beautiful Night) imprisoned at Fort Snelling. her husband was one of the hanged men, Hda-ya-in-yan-ke, or Rattling Runner (or Walker, or a completely different name Rda-in-yan-kna (Rattling Runner) depending on which version you see), Han-ye-tu Was-te Win was Chief Wabasha's daughter.

She has always fascinated me, there she is with all the other women, her husband was missing, she didn't know where he was. If you look at a bigger photograph of her you can see she is wearing a wedding ring, which says that she had been converted to Christianity at some time, she was probably married by Whipple in a church. Yet here she is in a concentration camp, being called names such as Heathen, and savage, yet she was just as much a Christian as those who called her these names. It had to have been very confusing for her and others who were in her situation. Then on top of this confusion is where is her husband? of course we know now that he was one of the 38 hanged.

Just look at her face, you can see the hurt in her expression.

This woman was another one who was in an exhibit we had at the Little Feather Center in Pipestone in the early 90's, we had so many people wanting to know about her, what happened to her? was the biggest question and I felt bad because I didn't know. I would love to know so if any of you are descendents of her please let me know, I too would love to know.

Thank you to riders and support staff. Those that are feeding and housing along the way, too! Rain and cold won't stop these warriors, but I'm sending prayers for some blessings from grandfather sun! Rest well and I hope you are getting dry and warm tonight.
