Dakota 38 + 2 Memorial Ride 2018

Day 6

The photo above shows a woman and her children in captivity at Fort Snelling. This woman is one of Little Crow's wives and children. She is one of at least four of his wives, those four were all sisters, daughters of Inyangmani, a Wahpeton Chief. Some of his wives were Saiciyewin, Makatowin (Blue Earth woman), Manikiyahewin(1838 - 1900), and Mazaiyegewin. I don't know which wife this is although I suspect it is Saiciyewin, as she is on the women's list of Ft Snelling prisoners as having 12 people with her. (It is under Passing Hail's list - he became the leader of Little Crow's band before the war, Little Crow was asked to be the War Chief by the people for the war - see his speech..)

Today there is no written prayer, instead a photograph from yesterday's Ride. You will see why.

This rider, Andrea, has on her back a Cradleboard, she is carrying it for this part of the Ride. It is to honor and remember the women who were imprisoned in Ft Snelling after being force marched there after the war.

All of the women on the Ride will take it in turn to carry the Cradleboard during the Ride.

This alone is a prayer by the women of today for the women of 1862, like our feature woman today.

You Win are amazing. Thank you all.

Madison

Madison, South Dakota area was settled In the 1860’s by German and Norwegian homesteaders. The many surrounding lakes were definitely a drawing factor. The landscape reminded the settlers so much of the capital of Wisconsin that they gave the fledging town the same name.

Madison, South Dakota was founded in 1875 as the railroads started their westward tracks. Madison and Herman competed for the county seat but reached a compromise and both villages moved to a halfway point, merging and taking the name of Madison. The town began as an agricultural area, agriculture developed it, and agriculture still supports it today.

Thank you to the Madison Community for their hospitality. Especially to Bill Kretch who took care of the horses at his farm.

Today the Ride goes 28 miles from Madison to Flandreau, the last stop in South Dakota. There will be a day of rest there tomorrow before moving on to Minnesota, home of the Dakota the Ride is for. The horses will stay at the Flandreau Indian School Corral and the Riders will stay at the Royal River Hotel. Breakfast will again be at the Chuck Wagon. Lunch will be at Eastman Hall, just behind the Hotel, take the road at the north side of the hotel, and go to the next intersection and take a right there. Eastman Hall is on the right. Dinner will be hosted by Pam Bird and family.

Prayers and Good wishes from the Supporters Group for today
