DAKOTA 38+
2 MEMORIAL RIDE - 2022
Hello, It is December 16th,
2022, and the final Dakota 38 + 2 Memorial Ride is in it's seventh day.
This is the seventh webpage of the Ride.
I have added the different
years Rides pages at the bottom of the webpages where the other links
are, so that those of you who are new can see them.
The background of this page
is of a young woman Rider leading the Spirit Horse for that particular
leg of the day's Ride It is always a great honor to lead the Spirit Horse
A Spirit Horse has an empty
saddle/no saddle at all. It is there offering a place for Spirit to Ride
on. Spirit Horses change as they go along so they all get a chance of
a Special Rider.
This section will stay here
all along the Ride to enable people to get calendars no matter what day
they come in first.
I am making some different
calendars this year. The first one is of the horses through the years,
the second one will be of unusual, beautiful, photos that have been taken
through the years. They will be $5 each payable to the Go Fund Me page
for the Ride expenses. The 3rd one I am working on is a Historic one,
of the Dakota 38 and 1862. That Calendar will be FREE. Years ago I was
given permission to use these photos from the MN Historical Society as
long as I didn't charge anyone for them. So the Calendar with those photos
will be free. Same proceedure. Gloria (Admin)

I hope this URL works OK.
If you want a Calendar, please
email me at dakota38@dragonflydezignz.50megs.com
ASAP
Let me know which you want and I will email you a PDF file so that you
can print them out yourself. As usual I will need an up to date email
address from you, or it/they won't reach you, Thanks, Gloria
FYI: You get a PDF file
in your email, you can then print your own calendar, I do not mail the
actual calendar out to you. As I live in England that would be a bit expensive
to do!! It does work as I made the calendars for a number of years a while
back and as far as I know everyone managed to print one out.
For those of you who have ordered calendars, you are on my list and
the PDF's will be sent out as soon as I have them tested. Keep an eye
out in your email, also the junk mail just in case! Thanks - Gloria

I won't have got it on my file yet.
Day 6/7
Joy Maddix Dacus
In Dakota 38, Mikey Peters, great-grandson of Medicine Bottle, tells
of the importance of the horse. Dakota belief says that it represents
the sacred six directions, without which healing is impossible.
The front legs symbolize west and north, the back legs, east and
south. The head and ears point toward Wakatahe [the heavens], and
the tail anchors all to Mother Earth.
When you put those six directions together it creates a sacred
center to bring Wowakanits a sacredness that you can
only have with these six directions. And you can pray while youre
on your horse. Peters says in the film. Some people
can remember things that ancestors went through. Its the horse
leading the way because of its healing power.

I think this was a lovely post that
came in during the 2017 Ride. I am sharing again now. Gloria Hazell
This is a wonderful message from a new member Tiffany Joseph
who is feeling content.

'I speak for all the ladies in the South Dakota woman's prison who
wish they could b there for the riders .. once we learned about
the ride we followed n tried to do what we could for the riders
.. one year we raised money in support of them.from the ladies inside
who send out prayers each day, go to sweat as well as have their
pipes ceremony for them. Shirley Crane educated us about the ride
so what we would love for all riders to know is that all the woman
locked up are praying hard for u n are there in spirit'.

Michele Marie Sommers this is a part of our native history and ancestry.
We dont ride alone. They are all with us and beside us. There
are caretakers that watch over the riders and children as well. The
horses are well taken care of in fact, their care is of the upmost
importance. No one is put in danger deliberately. Everyone is family
and watches out for the other. They know this ride is hard, and they
also know that this ride is the last, so anything can and will happen.
but the prayers are strong, and the Chanupa travels with them. Gloria
as a past rider in this ride I would love to have a calendar if thats
possible |

A History
of the Ride
written by Alberta Iron Cloud Miller (Jim's wife)..2013
A little history for the
newcomers: The Dakota 38+2 Wokiksuye Ride came together in 2005 after
Jim had a dream to ride east to a place where a large group of men were
hung. He was given specific instruction on what offerings to take and
to place the offerings on a horse with no rider. We later heard from two
Dakota men that the spirits had already told of riders coming from the
west back to Dakota country.
With the support of some
very strong and clear minded wicasa who felt the spiritual power, the
dream came into reality. Alex White Plume, Birgil Kills Straight and a
crew of Big Foot Riders came to Lower Sioux Agency to help start the ride.
The Dakota reserves were represented by Gus High Eagle and Carl Mazawasicuna.
Our keeper of the Sacred Pipe, Arvol Looking Horse, was our spiritual
leader to lead the riders in sacred prayer. Sheldon Wolfchild and the
families from Lower Sioux created the path from Morton to Mankato based
on their historical knowledge. The only intention of the dream was to
ride and pray. No more no less.
We did not spread word of
the ride via Facebook or internet, only through "moccasin telegraph".
Riders came from the Dakota reserves in Canada, from South Dakota, North
Dakota and right from Minnesota. In later years the participation expanded
to include riders from all the reservations where the exiled Dakota settled.
The majority of the riders are descendants of the 38 Dakota men who were
hung on December 26, 1862.
The ride started in Lower
Sioux because that was the site of the 1862 War. The Riders and supporters
from Lower Sioux provided the riders with comfort, food, and a place to
lay down after a long day's ride. Every man, woman and child took loving
care of their horses before they took care of themselves because of their
understanding of the strong relationship between a man and his relative
sunka wakan.
Each year from 2005 to 2007
the ride started in Lower Sioux. Beginning in 2008 the ride started at
the Missouri River as described in the dream and has continued from that
point following the path of the dream. There are powerful stories of a
supernatural nature that have been told by the riders.
The 2008 ride was documented
by Silas Hagerty and a crew of young Dakota who helped bring the story
together. Silas and Jim met at an inipi out east and their relationship
provided the foundation for the film which captures the history as well
as the spiritual essence of the ride. The power comes from the prayer,
it comes from people treating each other as good relatives and finally,
acknowledging that the riders ride for their ancestors and their nations.
For that reason the film is free.
Jim carried the staff for
4 years and passed it on to toska Peter Lengkeek in 2008 who in turn passed
it on to Perry Little after he carried it for 4 years. Jim has continued
to serve as an advisor and works to spread the word of healing through
the Dakota 38 film and travels only on invitation. To reiterate, the only
intent of the ride is to pray. Any effort to market the ride is not acceptable.
In the words of our spiritual leader Arvol Looking Horse, our people follow
the way of the pte oyate (buffalo nation) where we take care of one another
and unsilaka (compassion) our people.
The dream has brought healing
to many people in the Dakota Nation as well as non-Indian folks. There's
been a healing of relationships with the communities along the Dakota
trail or Hwy. 34. Where there was fear of one another there is hope. All
of this has happened because of healing and from the prayers of the riders
and their supporters. The prayers of the riders have manifested this healing.
Thanks Alberta!
