DAKOTA 38+
2 MEMORIAL RIDE - 2022
Hello, It is December 17th,
2022, and the final Dakota 38 + 2 Memorial Ride is in it's eighth day.
This is the eighth webpage of the Ride.
I have added the different
years Rides pages at the bottom of the webpages where the other links
are, so that those of you who are new can see them.
The background of this page
is of a the Riders coming from Madison on the way to Flandreau, on the
15th, they had to stop riding as the weather became really bad and so
the Ride was terminated until the weather became better. They were transported
to Flandreau, and will pick up from where they were when the weather gets
better, which could be today, or tomorrow when their rest days are over.
As of yesterday,
we now have 9,000 members in the group.
However less
than 1% of that number are visiting the web site.
This section will stay here
all along the Ride to enable people to get calendars no matter what day
they come in first.
I am making some different
calendars this year. The first one is of the horses through the years,
the second one will be of unusual, beautiful, photos that have been taken
through the years. They will be $5 each payable to the Go Fund Me page
for the Ride expenses. The 3rd one I am working on is a Historic one,
of the Dakota 38 and 1862. That Calendar will be FREE. Years ago I was
given permission to use these photos from the MN Historical Society as
long as I didn't charge anyone for them. So the Calendar with those photos
will be free. Same proceedure. Gloria (Admin)

I hope this URL works OK.
If you want a Calendar, please
email me at dakota38@dragonflydezignz.50megs.com
ASAP
Let me know which you want and I will email you a PDF file so that you
can print them out yourself. As usual I will need an up to date email
address from you, or it/they won't reach you, Thanks, Gloria
FYI: You get a PDF file
in your email, you can then print your own calendar, I do not mail the
actual calendar out to you. As I live in England that would be a bit expensive
to do!! It does work as I made the calendars for a number of years a while
back and as far as I know everyone managed to print one out.
For those of you who have ordered calendars, you are on my list and
the PDF's will be sent out as soon as I have them tested. Keep an eye
out in your email, also the junk mail just in case! Thanks - Gloria
Prayers for the day from
Nancy Kohn Raven - 2014
The Soul of a Horse and the Soul of a Man are almost identical, they are
each made from Stardust, once you are intimate with a horse, with one
horse, exchanging breath blowing each on the other, you will be connected
to all horses. In the eye of a Horse you can see many things, the beginning
of the World and the red glow of its ending, and all this the horse knows
and more as well, they die with Valor and Nobility of Heart, and with
acceptance of what is and was and what will ever be,
Today these same ponies walk with the riders, blowing their sacred breath
into the cold of a winters day, snorting and prancing, talking in horse
talk to their brothers. Telling them stories of where the grass still
grows belly deep and how they run still in high chaparral, and drink long
and deep from cold rivers, and what it is to be free, running in the wind.
Today I send a prayer, to
where the Sun goes down, the place of horse and its beginning, Be with
us now. and forever,
Aho Nancy Raven Kohn
Here are some good wishes
for the Riders that came in since yesterday.
Once I have collected your post I will like it. If I haven't liked it
I won't have got it on my file yet.
Day 7/8

Just to let you know that we are aware of the photograph problems
and are looking into it. Nina changed her settings and so the group
cannot access her photos. I think that if you are a friend of hers
you may still be able to see them. Please don't feel offended you
have done nothing wrong. I will post asap with what is happening
.Honey Wakinyan Na

Will we be able to see the videos? I haven't seen any of yesterday's
or last night. I saw them marked to where only certain people can
see. Now those have disappeared to. I don't understand after the
years of being part of this group. My Heart was broken. Videos are
still gone from yesterday's ride that were on. I Thank you for your
help
Gloria (Admin)
Ola, There were technical issues causing Nina's photos and videos
to run away and hide. It was sorted later in the evening. You should
be able to see everything now.

Remembering: We are at Unity
School District in Balsam Lake, WI.
Students in the Migizi Club will be following the ride in the high
school and middle school. Unity has students from 10 tribes, but
about 95% of our Native students are Ojibwe - mainly from the Round
Lake community of the St. Croix Band of Ojibwe. From Cherokee

A Small
Piece of History
written & experienced by Gloria Hazell-Derby
In 1995 - 1997, my late
husband Chuck, and I were members of The Gathering of Kinship Committee.
The group was started to heal the wounds of the 1862 heartache, from both
sides. In 1997 we had decided to get the Dakota people to carry the names
of the 38 plus 3 (Little Crow was the third person) for the following
year, so that they could have the mourning process done for them. Dakota
people in the old days would honour the dead for a year, a wife would
carry a bundle of her husbands things with her, she would talk to it,
put food out for it and she would put it in his seating place and sleeping
area, as if it were him, she would not wear new clothes, or dance, nor
socialize. After a year she would return the bundle to his relatives and
they would provide her with new clothes to begin her life again.
I guess it was a good way
to get used to the loved one not being around, it was a custom and so
she could do it in a way that was acceptable to everyone. Nowadays we
are told to 'get over it' in many cases, we are not allowed to mourn our
dead, for as long as they were allowed to. Of course when the men were
hung in Mankato they had no one to mourn for them as their wives and family
were imprisoned and were having a hard enough time just to survive. They
needed to be mourned and their Spirits put to rest. So I asked Galan Drapeau
Sr, the man who buried Little Crow if he would do a ceremony for these
men, and he said yes. The committee made up leather name tags for each
man and they would be given to people in place of the bundle. We hoped
to get actual descendants to take them home but that was hard to do and
so only a few in the end were taken by family members.
Anyway the day came for the
ceremony, it was to be done at Birch Coulee, during the memorial powwow
that was on for 2 days. We gathered together in the sun around Galen while
he took every one of those name tags and did a ceremony with them. It
was amazing. people just stood quietly and watched him (and another spiritual
leader) do their spiritual work. Then the names were given out to the
people.
The one thing that came from
that day was the amount of people (including myself) who saw the spirit
lights in the trees circling us. they were just flashing off and on all
over those trees, but of course we knew not to say anything that would
disturb the spiritual men while they worked. I don't know if they saw
those lights but I know many of us did. Those spirits were watching as
well, as enthralled as we all were, while the men did their wonderful
work. It was a great honour to be there and to be a part of that committee.
Baine Wilson who was the man who was the founder of the group has gone
now, his wife Lillian became a good friend, as did most of that group.
We had a spiritual link to each other.
(The day that we did the
ceremony, was the same day that Princess Diana died. The following day
everyone at the powwow did an honor dance for her, probably the first
honoring for her in the world.)
I went back to England a
few weeks afterwards, and so never got to see the name tags bought back
the following year. I know all of them were not returned, I have heard
of one that is worn on regalia as a continuing honoring to that man.
