Staines

Staines is an urban area in the Borough (Hundreds) of Spelthorne (Spelethorne). The main towns in Spelthorne are Staines (Stanes), Ashford (Exeford), Stanwell (Stanwelle), Shepperton (Scepertone), Sunbury (Sunbarie). Staines is the administrative centre of the Borough and has the largest shopping area. Spelthorne is a district of London, that has a population of approximately 90,000, and covers 21 square miles.

The Digs in Staines

This was found in one of the Digs. It is Roman and it has the foot prints of a cat embedded in the clay.
Isn't it lovely to be able to see this, imagine that cat after it walked through the wet or damp clay, throwing it's legs about trying to remove what had stuck to it's feet!
There is another one of these on show in the Spelthorne Museum.

Let's start at the far end of the High Street, near the Iron Bridge.
The start of a dig, everything is on our street level. A digger is ready to start work clearing the area.

You can see that this is opposite the Retlaws Toy shop and the Record Scene shop. The digger is hard at work.

The Iron Bridge. No signs of any buildings next to it on this side of the road, what was there has gone.
The White Lion was on this corner along with Mumford & Lobb (furnishers).
This is probably the dig for Mumford & Lobb, 115-117 High Street.
This would have been in 1972.

These are the digs that have taken place in Staines
All were Excavation's except for the Friends Burial Ground which was a 'Watching Brief'.
