HIGH
STREET
I
have researched who were doing business in each building through
the years. Some old buildings have been demolished and some new
ones have been built. Of course, both of those will not have as
many people using them. *Numbers 44
to 48 are listed buildings from the 1700's.
This page shows what shops were where and when, and in most instances
what they sold or did.
It is for historic purposes and is broken up into areas. This page
is the High Street and the Elmsleigh Centre, I am working on Thames
Street, Clarence Street, Church Street and Bridge Street at the
moment, Two Rivers will be listed separately as it is qute new.
I will continue researching the High Street to fill in gaps and
will keep updating it. I hope you enjoy looking at this section
and it can help with any research you may have. Gloria Hazell

From
Staines Bridge to what is now the Market Square, (Clarence
Street), the shops were a number of incarnations of houses/Cinema,
through the years, including:
By the Bridge: Boat yard, Cinema, Carvery, Apartment
block.
Bridge House Hotel (from Road to the River)
Other side of Colne: Colne House (demolished 1960's),
Restaurants, shops
Prior
to the new Bridge, the Bush Inn owned most of this land and
it was used for stabling up to 100 horses, they had a lush
Mediterranean type garden, and a Tap room.
The land on what is now Bridge Street, down to Church Street,
was mostly owned by the Ashby family and was part of the Brewery
works. Later the Gardam family were given some of the land
next to the river to use.
Prior
to the changes in the 1870's when buildings were demolished
and the new Town Hall was built, there was a small road
going from what is the High Street (now leading to Clarence
Street and the new Bridge) to the River where the old bridge
was located. I believe the road was called Black Boy Lane.
A Market House was located on the roadway, where it is said
that Sir Walter Raleigh was indicted for Treason in 1603.
A Quaker Hall and the Bush Inn were also on this road way.
Later excavations found that this area was important in
Roman times, and that they had used this same place for
bridges.

The
Old Staines Fire Station to the right of the Town Hall (Captain
Edmund Denyer (1900's), Captain Thomas Crimble 1930's) used
to house the old 1738 fire engine. The building was later
used by the Spelthorne Museum until the 2000's when
it was moved to Thames Street, in the same building as the
Library. The old fire engine is housed in the Museum still.
You can reach it via Friends Walk.
2021: The old building next to the Town Hall will
be altered and will be a part of the new complex of apartments
housed in the Town Hall. As it is a listed
ll building it has to be changed sympathetically
to stay within it's old history.
Also
behind the Town hall was the Staines Day Centre for Senior
Citizens for a number of years. It was moved to a larger
building on Thames Street where it is now. (2022)

ll* building (1953)
This
Public House is one of the oldest in Staines, it has had
various incarnations. There was a rebuild in c.1700 of a
much older previous building. During a renovation, around
1953, some George lll coins were found, under the floorboards,
dated 1799 & 1806. Five of the windows upstairs are
not real, they were altered when the window tax came in,
and were never changed back when it ended in 1851.
At times a landlord rented out the left side to different
shop owners to use. The whole down stairs is now (2022)
a restaurant.

A refreshment room was a place in the late 1800's, where
people could get away from the pub, a stand-up brash male
environment, that was then all the rage. Refreshment rooms
were refined, comfortable and homely environments, which
served good honest food and drink. - Google

(I read in an old 1970's book that this business, they say,
Is the longest running shop in Staines. I believe though
that number 118 High Street is the longest running. By the
Bone family who were newsagents in that building. They also
had other shops and were Undertakers as well. It is said
to be from the 1500's, and has grade 11 listing.)

DEBENHAMS
Became the largest department store in Staines during the
mid 60's. It had many departments in the basement and 4
floors. The items sold were always good quality, and of
course more expensive. The Restaurant was always lovely,
with great, fresh, wonderfully prepared, meals. Closer to
it's demise it changed into more of a cafe/coffee shop.
2019: Debenham's store is now closed, and Staines residents
are fighting to stop the building from being pulled down
and two new High Rise buidings being built in their space.
All those buildings marked with a (K)
were demolished and first Kennards and later
Debenhams was extended to take over the space of those buisinesses.

CLOCKS
ON THE HIGH STREET (2)
The
'James Walker's' Jewellers clock on the left hung along the
High Street for many years. The 'Cattley' photographers clock
that hung outside the Percy Harris shop for years is in the
middle, and the clock on the right was the one that hung outside
the Co-operative Society shop building on the Kingston Road
in the 1950's.
There was another outside I think about 1922, at probably
6 High Street. I will update once I find the photo that I
have saved somewhere.

Pope, the daughter of Dr. Pope, the physician to King George
ll. Margaret herself had the Pope school in Thames Street
and the girls school as well.) It was said to be demolished
in early 1900, but I have not, as yet, found a date.

I
remember a small tobacconist/sweet shop in this area, from
what is now the Elmsleigh Centre entrance to this spot, next
to a bus stop. I sometimes used to stop in there on my way
home from work (Woolworths) in the early 1960's. I remember
it being very tiny, with a tobacco smell. Cannot remember
the name of it though. It seemed very old though, maybe it
was a Bone tobacconist, Can anyone else remember any details
about it? Please contact me if you do. Thanks.
