2020 (Virtual Ride)

Circling up at Pipestone National Monument, 2010 - Courtesy of the Pipestone County Star.

Due to Covid 19 the Ride is not happening this year, so I am making up a virtual Ride from previous year's Ride's photos and comments.

Hopefully the Ride will be back on in 2021

Day 7

Prayer of the Day

Nancy Kohn Raven - 2014
The Soul of a Horse and the Soul of a Man are almost identical, they are each made from Stardust, once you are intimate with a horse, with one horse, exchanging breath, blowing each on the other, you will be connected to all horses. In the eye of a Horse you can see many things, the beginning of the World and the red glow of its ending, and all this the horse knows and more as well. How many of our Warriors felt the anguish of their ponies falling in the sand, its nostrils blood red, staining the Earth, So many died this way, and massacred by white mans greed, Did they die with regret you ask?? No they died with Valor and Nobility of Heart, and with acceptance of what is and was and what will ever be. Today these same ponies walk with the riders, blowing their sacred breath into the cold of a winters day, snorting and prancing, talking in horse talk to their brothers. Telling them stories of where the grass still grows belly deep and how they run still in high chaparral, and drink long and deep from cold rivers, and what it is to be free, running in the wind.
Today I send a prayer, to where the Sun goes down, the place of horse and its beginning, Be with us now and forever,
Aho Nancy

Good morning everyone. The elements are not the best. Please be safe, warm and most of all take good care of the one who carries you on your sacred, humble, journey.
As I have my morning coffee, I sit and say prayer for all of you, can you imagine how it was for our ancestors, no car to warm up, only what was provided them by our 4 leggeds. I feel such a ache in my heart for them,
We look forward to your arrival here in our small Indian community in Pipestone.
Peg Delugo - 2014
You really have so much support, I hope you continue to keep an open group so those of us that live far away can be a support and send up prayers. We had world peace and prayer day committee meeting and I was able to share your ride with other committee members who are unaware of this ride . I was asked all sorts of questions I couldnt answer since I am new to your group but just sharing a little others were sending their voices in support and prayer. I thank you for allowing me to be a member even though you dont know me.
Rosetta Walker - 2017
As the early morning light starts to make its way over Mother Earth, prayers have been said for the horses, riders and support crew.
As the sun sets, prayers are offered up to all. Tears of gratitude and appreciation
May your journey be blessed.

(Another story) The header photo is from the year that I participated in the Ride, prior to my return to the UK. I am the woman standing with my back to the camera on the right side, wearing a green coat. I am next to the Superintendant of the Monument (wearing the hat.) I was very honoured to be asked to drive in front of the horses and lead the way from there to the Little Feather Center, where the food was. I still remember looking in my rear view mirror and seeing all of the horses behind me. My husband, Chuck Derby, passed away in August 2010, and I promised him that I would continue to do what I could for the Ride. At the Center Peter told me that they would always stop at the Little Feather in remembrance of Chuck. A lovely memory. - Gloria

FYI: The Spirit Bag contains the names of all the people who need prayers said for them.
It is carried by different people for the whole of the Ride, prayers are said for the People all through the Ride.
This bag was brought over from South Africa by Sharlene.

Thanks to my sister-in-law Alice and her team for feeding the Riders every year since 2008.

Before coming to Pipestone each year the Riders visit the grave of Taoya'te Duta (Little Crow), to pay their respects.
Little Crow was the Chief at the time of the 1862 Conflict. He was shot in a farmer's field in Hutchinson a year later.

Read the dates on the gravestone... Yes those dates are correct.
