2020 (Virtual Ride)

2014 featuring the Spirit Horse

Due to Covid 19 the Ride is not happening this year, so I am making up a virtual Ride from previous year's Ride's photos and comments.

Hopefully the Ride will be back on in 2021

Prayer of the day

Prayer from Mo
Good morning relatives, Creator we offer prayers and smoke up tobacco down on this beautiful day. We offer gratitude for the team of volunteers, host, support staff, and admin team all of whom are providing for our horse nation, brothers, and sisters who are in prayer for our ancestors. Surround them with the strength of heart ,mind, spirit, and body to continue this journey. We honour them today and always. It's great to ride

Spirit Horse by Gloria
This is the riderless horse that leads the Ride, it is for the use of the Spirit of those who wish to ride alongside the riders. It has been said in the early days that Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse were among those who rode with our Riders using the Spirit Horse.
The Horses take it in turn to be the Spirit Horse. Sometimes they are saddled, sometimes not. They often carry prayer ties. The one featured here is wearing a face covering. (Although this was in 2014 it is very apt for today's world!) Most do not wear regalia.

While we are on the subject of face coverings...

Taken from the old Ride FB page that closed down in 2015. We opened this Supporters group at that time. There was no Web site made that year as we were not in a space to do one. So I have used a few comments and pics from the old site, that I, as Admin, can still access. - Gloria

Ubuntu, friends! "I am who I am because you are who you are." ...from the South African Zulu tribe. Your words on this post reminded me of this phrase. We are all related and must depend on each other. (From the old FB group)

Hello Everyone, It has been awhile since I posted in here. I think of this Dakota 38 + 2 Memorial Ride site.. I have a lot of respect for everyone who put their all into the donations, feeding & caring for the horses & people during the time of the ride, & Mostly for the Riders who carry all of our prayers. And if I left something out.. sorry. I really enjoy coming in here & feeling the power of Prayer. It is powerful! To know that I can have a peace of mind & feel lil bit better about myself. N.e.ways.. Have a beautiful day! Love you all!!

Josette Peltier made a commitment in prayer to help with the food on the ride. This sacred act continues to be shared amongst our people as an old tradition. My parents always taught us that the act of feeding people is sacred and signifies love for the people. When our family planned a feed my Ate would always tell us "put away that budget, open your pocket book, we're going to feed"! This sacred sharing has been a huge part of the ride. Looking back remember the winyan and the men who helped to cook and feed the riders and supporters. As winyan we are also taught to put good energy and love into the cooking so that everyone will receive a healing through the food as it is sacred medicine. Many thanks to all who provide the meals!

An Eagle Watched Over The Riders- December 14th 2013

It was an Awesome day, we got to the relay exchange to wait for the riders and then then next leg of the riders (Ray Shepherds Tiwahe) to continue to Howard SD. When the riders were approaching the staff bearer was pointing up. A Bald Eagle was circling above and was following the riders. It was an amazing feeling for me as I thought about the Riders that are no longer with us. I took the picture and it seemed to be at arms length. I was soaring with the wambdi at that moment. This is what I meant that I had to do this. Feeling the Healing! - Kxsw-fm Dakotah-Radio

I have just gotten to know Arlene. What a wonderful woman. She wanted me to post this letter she wrote. I hope you enjoy. - Keith - 2013

Honor for the 38+2 the year 1862, December 26
Down through the centuries our Dakota Oyate revered a strong and spiritual belief which has brought us to this time again. We are a people of an unseen unity, the strongest of life’s cohesive unity – respect and honor as it has from the era of our ancestors beginnings to be etched in stone to give to our future generations so as to let them know who we are, our stature which in time will carry us to every future man, woman and child as is being given in likeness at this time. Our children and many young people will remember who we honor with the remembrance of this ride, to give to their Great Great Grand-Children what has brought us to this endurance of our lives. Respect, responsibility, reverence and re-birth won’t ever end as long as our ancestors blood lines continue down to everyone, the cohesive unity we were born and raised with, to never be forgotten, and will not ever end, because the pain lives in my heart and I weep bitterly.

Yesterday (2020) some photos of Native Women were added to the group page, most were not Dakota, and so really don't have anything to do with the Ride, so I added to the thread three photos of our 1862 Dakota Women who were in the Concentration Camp at Fort Snelling; Apistoka, Winona, and Good (Beautiful) Night, (see below) so that it did become something to do with the Ride. Below are some comments about these photos.
Diane R. Anderson 2020
Because there is still so much sadness felt at the internment camp site, I wanted to honor all women of the first nations as beautiful.
Heather June Wellstead 2020
Just amazing historical pictures of beautiful women caught a moment in time. So much work put into their regalia.
Pamela Kay Leverenz 2020

One smile among the bunch, what I see in these women's faces ranges from sadness to straight up indignation and strength.
Stephanie Langer 2020
As I looked through these photos of strong, beautiful women I wonder what their lives were like, and what wisdom they might share with us if they were able. Amazing photos, thank you for sharing
Laura Lamere 2020
